Harmonious living experience that embraces the serene riverside setting.

Situated along the banks of the Schuylkill River, this custom single-family residence outside of Philadelphia is a testament to modern architectural design. The project involved a close collaboration between the architect and the client, aiming to create a home that offers unobstructed views of the river, particularly from the open concept main living space and the master bedroom. The design team went above and beyond by incorporating additional height to surpass FEMA regulations, ensuring both resilience and the capture of the breathtaking natural views that surround the property.

One of the standout features of this residence is the main living space, which is enclosed by glass on three sides. This design choice blurs the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors, allowing an abundance of natural light to flood the interior and creating a seamless connection with the surrounding environment. The panoramic river views become an integral part of the living experience, providing a sense of tranquility and beauty.

To address the need for sun shading and climate control, the design incorporates strategically placed overhangs. On the south and east sides of the house, seven-foot overhangs provide shade during the summer months, preventing excessive heat gain. On the west side, a covered patio acts as a nineteen-foot overhang, offering protection from the sun while still allowing direct sunlight to penetrate during the winter, maximizing passive solar heating. The covered patio is equipped with retractable screens that seamlessly integrate with the main living area when the sliding doors are opened. This versatile feature extends the living space and blurs the line between indoors and outdoors, creating a flexible environment that adapts to the changing needs and seasons.

Located in such a picturesque setting, the custom single-family residence benefits from the tranquil ambiance of the Schuylkill River. The site selection maximizes the scenic views and provides a sense of calmness and serenity. The design prioritizes the integration of nature, capturing the natural beauty of the surroundings and allowing the residents to feel connected to the ever-changing rhythms of the river.

This custom single-family residence along the Schuylkill River exemplifies the marriage between modern architecture and its natural surroundings. By working closely with the client, the design team has successfully achieved a home that offers unobstructed river views, surpasses FEMA regulations, and embraces a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience. The glass-wrapped main living space, combined with sun shading overhangs, creates a dynamic environment that maximizes natural light, provides climate control, and extends the usable living area. This residence is not just a place to live but a sanctuary that harmoniously blends with the serene beauty of the Schuylkill River landscape.
